About this tool

One date.
Two conventions.

A week number looks precise until two calendars disagree about where a week begins. ISO 8601 starts the week on Monday and defines week 1 as the week containing the first Thursday. US calendars commonly start the week on Sunday and treat January 1 as part of week 1. Both systems are useful; the important part is naming the convention before a schedule, report, or API passes the number to someone else.

GeoTimeTools’s week number calculator shows both ISO and US-style results for a selected date. It also reports the ISO week year and the Monday–Sunday range around the date. The week year matters near New Year’s Day because the last days of December can belong to ISO week 1 of the following year, while early January can still belong to the final ISO week of the previous year.

Use this tool for sprint labels, manufacturing weeks, analytics reports, publishing schedules, school calendars, travel planning, and “what week of the year is it?” questions. If a vendor or database specifies ISO 8601, use the ISO result. If you are matching a US wall calendar, the US result may be the more familiar reference. The separate values make the difference visible instead of hiding it behind a single ambiguous number.

ISO week year is not always the calendar year

December 31 can fall in ISO week 1 of the next week year, and January 1 can fall in the last ISO week of the previous year. Always store or display the ISO year with the week number when the date is near New Year’s.

Why this is useful for software

Week-based reporting often groups data before it renders a human date. Choosing a named convention prevents a US Sunday-start week from being confused with an ISO Monday-start week when teams or systems work across countries.
